Description	Civil War veteran Rufus Dawes (1838-1899), shown in two photographs, was the fifth of six children born to Henry and Sarah Cutler Dawes of Marietta. One picture, which measures 8.75 by 14.4 inches (22.23 by 36.58 cm) is of Dawes in his military uniform around 1864. The second photograph, 5.5 by 7.5 inches (13.97 by 19.05 cm), shows him shortly before his death. On Decoration Day (Memorial Day), 1899, he posed in front of his house with two of his grandchildren and cadets from Marietta High School. After his parents separated, his father moved to Wisconsin. When the Civil War broke out, Dawes helped to raise Company K of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteers. The regiment, together with the 2nd and 7th Wisconsin Volunteers and the 19th Indiana Volunteers, became known as the Iron Brigade. Although he participated in many large battles, Dawes suffered no battle injuries. In recognition of his leadership, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Dawes married Mary Gates of Marietta in 1864. After he returned from fighting, Dawes ran a successful lumber company and served one term in the U.S. Congress. He and Mary also raised a large family in Marietta. Their son Beman served as state representative from 1905-1909. Firstborn son Charles Gates Dawes, whose children appear in the 1899 photograph, enjoyed a successful career; he served as vice president under Calvin Coolidge and received the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize. Rufus Dawes died in 1899.
