fifth
of
six
children
born
to
Henry
and
Sarah
Cutler
Dawes
of
Marietta
.
One
picture
,
which
measures
8.75
by
14.4
inches
(22.23
by
36.58
cm)
is
of
Dawes
in his
military
uniform
around
1864
. The
second
photograph
,
5.5
by
7.5
inches
(13.97
by
19.05
cm)
,
shows
him
shortly
before
his
death
. On
Decoration
Day
(Memorial
Day)
,
1899
, he
posed
in
front
of his
house
with
two
of his
grandchildren
and
cadets
from
Marietta
High
School
.
After
his
parents
separated
, his
father
moved
to
Wisconsin
.
When
the
Civil
War
broke
out
,
Dawes
helped
to
raise
Company
K
of the
6th
Wisconsin
Volunteers
. The
regiment
,
together
with the
2nd
and
7th
Wisconsin
Volunteers
and the
19th
Indiana
Volunteers
,
became
known
as the
Iron
Brigade
.
Although
he
participated
in
many
large
battles
,
Dawes
suffered
no
battle
injuries
. In
recognition
of his
leadership
, he
rose
to the
rank
of
lieutenant
colonel
.
Dawes
married
Mary
Gates
of
Marietta
in
1864
.
After
he
returned
from
fighting
,
Dawes
ran
a
successful
lumber
company
and
served
one
term
in the
U.S
.
Congress
. He and
Mary
also
raised
a
large
family
in
Marietta
. Their
son
Beman
served
as
state
representative
from
1905-1909
.
Firstborn
son
Charles
Gates
Dawes
,
whose
children
appear
in the
1899
photograph
,
enjoyed
a
successful
career
; he
served
as
vice
president
under
Calvin
Coolidge
and
received
the
1925
Nobel
Peace
Prize
.
Rufus
Dawes
died
in
1899
.
