Description	The Ravenna Temperance Society was formed after a series of articles written by Reverend John Seward appeared in the local newspaper in 1829. The articles called for the formation of temperance societies in every township of Portage County, and inspired lawyer and politician Darius Lyman to attempt to form a temperance organization in Portage County. After several futile attempts and a series of violent protests against such an organization, Lyman succeeded in forming the Ravenna Temperance Society in 1830. The Constitution calls for the formation of the group for "the purpose of counter- acting the contaminating influence of Intemperance." It is bound, along with the minutes of the organization, in a 73-page volume that measures 6.25" x 7.5" (15.9 x 19 cm). The Constitution is part of a larger collection that includes the first membership list of the Ravenna Temperance Society, as well as its constitution and minutes. The membership list shows broad support for the organization, despite the protests against it. The first signature is of Ephraim Shaler, a local tavern owner. Women are especially prominent on the membership list, indicating their dominance in the temperance movement. More information on collection can be found at the Reed Memorial Library web site.
