January 1841 Rebecca T. Galloway
16th Saturday my horse was gone Joseph caught me another and the boys
went to Mrs [superscript] Cassil's it commenced raining I did not get home till almost night
it rained on my coming home Thomas came home soon after Irenia set up
till almost 10 oclock we set up a while after and went to bed Sabbth 17th [superscript] Irenia Thomas
and myself went to church to hear Mr [superscript] Smart preach came home had supper read some
Irena went to bed soon we set up till 10 Mon 18th [superscript] a very cold morning I cleaned
up the room and helped put in a comfort Tom went a way we went to work and got it
cut about 3 oclock Mr [superscript] and Mrs [superscript] Stevenson came and set till bedtime Irena got burnt and
went to bed Tues 19th [superscript] Irene kept me awake till one o'clock at night with her eye I got
up and helped with the work sewed some at carpet rags Irene went to bed and laid till sup
Wednes 20th [superscript] cleaned up the room Irena and I washed Mr [superscript] Townsley went to Town came
home and brought me a letter from Jim I sewed some at karpet rags and am ready
to go to bed 21st [superscript] Thurs done up the work and Martha and I went over to Collins I went up
to the examination it was to cold and they all went home Joseph Catharine and David
came down with me to Collins and staid till after supper and then came home they came
home with us Mr [superscript] Crawford came to see Irena they set up almost all night Friday 22
Irena and I cleaned up stairs and put down the Carpit I went over to Collins and cut out a dres
for Lidea John Cirus and Jim came over and staid till bed time Sat 23rd [superscript] I starched and done
up clothes Irena went away I set up till late Sabbath 24th [superscript] Jim went away and the rest of us all
went to church had two sermons came home said our questions had preyrs and went to bed Mon 25th [superscript]
I helped get breakfast Irena came home I made up beds and cleaned downstairs Grand father
Mrs [superscript] Townsley came here and staid [t not crossed] till after dinner and went home and left Grand father
Mr [superscript] Townsley gone to town came home Martha and him went over to Collins Thomas
Harbinson came out and staid all night Thomas Galloway was here Tues 26th [superscript and underlined] I wrote in
an Album Mr [superscript] Russel was here I cut out carpet rags Martha and Irena was washing after they
were done I washed carpet rags and sewed from that till bed time Wednes 27th [superscript and underlined] I cleaned up
the room mended my Apron fixed my Curls starched and Ironed clothes done up caps Jim
Laughead was here got his Album I went over to Joes nobody at home came back eat supper
read some wrote in my journal and am now ready to go to bed Thurs 28th [superscript] I sewed some
done up caps Friday 29th [superscript] I cut carpet rags and then cleaned house baked pies and helped in the
kitchen we were expecting company they all came the two Miss Jacksons the two Miss
Laugheads and Jim and Sam Sarah Micheal and Sam Young Ried and Ann Tom and
Jim Townsley Joseph and Catharine were all here Sat 30th [superscript] After breakfast

| Description | Rebecca Thompson Galloway (b. 1814) of Greene County, Ohio kept this diary from 1840 to 1842. Galloway discusses abolition and the Underground Railroad in several passages. She writes, "I went to town to the abolition meeting" and "stopped at Collins saw a runaway Negro." William Collins was born in 1800 and was one of Greene County's most active abolitionists. The diary measures 6.5" x 8" (16.51 x 20.32 cm) and is approximately 75 pages in length. Entries for the year 1841 are digitized here. |
