Description	Two programs, from June 29, 1877 and June 13, 1878, mark the first and second anniversaries of Rio Grande College. The printed programs measure 4.5 by 4.75 inches (11.43 by 12.06 cm). They list the order of prayers, speeches, and songs that honored the occasion. The college, founded by Reverend Ira Z. Haning and Permelia Atwood Wood, was affiliated with the Free Will Baptist Church. It was built on the Atwood farm. Permelia Wood provided funds for construction of the first college building and a dormitory in honor of her first husband, Nehemiah Atwood. Construction began in 1875. In December 1875, the college was legally organized. It was dedicated on August 29, 1876 and classes began a month later. The first graduation ceremony took place in 1883. Now known as University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College, it was one of the first institutions of higher learning established by a woman. From the beginning, it has had a non-discriminatory admission policy, welcoming students of both genders and all races.
