Sockman
(1889-1970)
, a
Mt
.
Vernon
native
and
Ohio
Wesleyan
University
graduate
of
1911
, was
one
of the
nation's
best
known
Protestant
clergymen
from the
1920s
through
the
1960s
. He
served
Christ
Church
,
Methodist
in
New
York
City
for
44
years
. He was
one
of the
first
ministers
to
preach
a
sermon
on the
radio
and
became
famous
for his
Sunday
"
National
Radio
Pulpit
"
program
on
NBC
from
1928-1961
. In
1941
he was
named
one
of
six
foremost
ministers
in the
U
.
S
. by
Christian
Century
, and on
October
6
,
1961
Time
referred
to him as "
one
of the
top
clergymen
in the
U
.
S
.
who
is
generally
acknowledged
as the
best
Protestant
preacher
in the
U
.
S.
"
Sockman
received
honorary
degrees
from
25
colleges
and
universities
. He was
author
of
twenty
books
and
numerous
articles
.
Three
times
he
declined
becoming
a
bishop
of the
Methodist
Church
,
choosing
to
remain
a
minister
. He
married
Zellah
Endly
, an
Ohio
Wesleyan
graduate
of
1912
,
who
survived
him. He also
served
as a
trustee
of
Ohio
Wesleyan
University
from
1941
to his
death
in
1970
.
