Description	Four photographs show seminarians receiving the ministries of lector and acolyte, the minor order of exorcist, and being ordained as deacons. Before the seminarian is ordained into the priesthood he receives a number of ministries, the ministries of lector, as seen in the first photograph, and the ministries of acolyte, as seen in the second photograph, being two of them. In both instances Bishop Edward Pevec, auxiliary bishop of Cleveland, is performing the ceremony in the spring of 1982. The photographs measure 3.5" x 5" (8.89 x 12.70 cm). After receiving all the ministries the seminarian then becomes a candidate for Holy Order. The culmination of his studies and preparation at the Pontifical College Josephinum is the day of ordination as a priest of Jesus Christ. The third photograph was taken around 1940 and measures 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.40 cm). It shows the ceremony conferring the minor order of acolyte (the young men in the front rows of the choir stalls holding lit candles). There are also empty seats in the choir stalls that belong to those kneeling at the altar. Those young men would be receiving the minor order of exorcist. Archbishop Amleto Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate, is the prelate. The final photograph is from 1956 and measures 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.40 cm). It shows the ordination of the seminarians as deacons. These men are in the prayerful position called "prostration" lying face down in humility and submission to the will of God. This happens within the ordination ceremonies of deacons, of priests, and of bishops. During this part of the ceremony, the cantor and congregation sing the "Litany of the Saints" invoking the help of the saints for the ministerial life of these men. The next part of the ceremony is what is called the "laying on of hands" when the ordaining bishop or prelate lays his hands (a scriptural gesture) upon the head of each person, signifying the special conferral of the Holy Spirit. It is at this sacred moment that the person is said to be ordained, and the bishop then completes the act of ordination in the "Prayer of Consecration" asking God to dedicate the deacons to the service of the altar and of the Word. Deacons are one step away from priesthood. The progression of ceremonies that young men go through by the time they are 26 (traditionally and before the Second Vatican Council [1965]) if they complete the required studies are Tonsure, Porter, Lector, Exorcist, Acolyte, Subdeacon, Deacon, and finally, Priest. In 1892, Pope Leo XIII granted the request of Father John Joseph Jessing, making the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio the only pontifical seminary outside of Italy.
