Description	Fifty-five pages relating to Gray, who is believed to have been the last veteran of the American Revolution are reproduced here. The selection includes his eulogy, poems about him, a portrait and photographs of his cabin and grave. This selection is taken from Private Dalzell: His Autobiography, Poems and Comic War Papers, Sketch of John Gray, Washington's Last Soldier, etc. Dalzell of Noble County, Ohio wrote about the experiences of his neighbor John Gray (1764-1868) based on conversations between the two men. Dalzell recounts his own efforts to help the poverty-stricken Gray receive a federal pension in 1867. According to the federal pension office, Gray was the last surviving pensioner of the Revolutionary war. The book is 242 pages long. Each page measures 4.75 by 7.5 inches (12.07 by 19.05 cm). Dalzell was a soldier, lawyer, and state representative from Noble County. Gray, a native of Virginia, is believed to have worked for George Washington at Mt. Vernon before joining the Continental army. After the war he moved to Ohio and in 1829 settled in what is now Noble County, near Hiramsburg.
