Description	Five aerial photographs show the development of the Pontifical College Josephinum campus in Columbus from the 1930s to the 1960s. The first photograph was taken in July 1930 from the northwest and shows the seminary wing near completion. The second photograph is from 1939. Dating from the late 1950s, the third and fourth photographs show the construction of the College of Liberal Arts and the recreation building. The fifth photograph shows the completed campus in the early 1960s. The photographs measure 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.40 cm). In 1877 Father John Joseph Jessing received permission from Bishop Sylvester Rosecrans to establish what eventually became the Josephinum in Columbus. Jessing, a German immigrant, had established an orphanage in Pomeroy that he funded through the publication of the Ohio Waisenfreund (Ohio Orphans' Friend), a German-language newspaper, but felt that he could accomplish more in a larger city. The Columbus Josephinum was originally located at 831 East Main, then known as Friend Street, at the corner of 18th Street. In 1888, he started the Collegium Josephinum to train young men for the priesthood and to minister primarily to German-speaking immigrants. In 1931, the Josephinum moved to a one-hundred-acre campus eleven miles north of downtown Columbus. To ensure that the Josephinum would continue after his death, Jessing asked that it be placed under the protection of the Holy See. Pope Leo XIII granted the request in 1892, thus making the Pontifical College Josephinum the only pontifical seminary outside of Italy.
