campus
in
Columbus
from the
1930s
to the
1960s
. The
first
photograph
was
taken
in
July
1930
from the
northwest
and
shows
the
seminary
wing
near
completion
. The
second
photograph
is
from
1939
.
Dating
from the
late
1950s
, the
third
and
fourth
photographs
show
the
construction
of the
College
of
Liberal
Arts
and the
recreation
building
. The
fifth
photograph

in the

. The

measure

"
(20.32
x
25.40
cm)
. In
1877
Father
John
Joseph
Jessing
received
permission
from
Bishop
Sylvester
Rosecrans
to
establish
what
eventually
became
the
Josephinum
in
Columbus
.
Jessing
, a
German
immigrant
, had
established
an
orphanage
in
Pomeroy
that he
funded
through
the
publication
of the
Ohio
Waisenfreund
(Ohio
Orphans
'
Friend)
, a
German-language
newspaper
, but
felt
that he
could
accomplish
more
in a
larger
city
. The
Columbus
Josephinum
was
originally
located
at
831
East
Main
, then
known
as
Friend
Street
, at the
corner
of
18th
Street
. In
1888
, he
started
the
Collegium
Josephinum
to
train
young
men
for the
priesthood
and to
minister
primarily
to
German-speaking
immigrants
. In
1931
, the
Josephinum
moved
to a
one-hundred-acre
campus
eleven
miles
north
of
downtown
Columbus
. To
ensure
that the
Josephinum
would
continue
after
his
death
,
Jessing
asked
that
it
be
placed
under
the
protection
of the
Holy
See
.
Pope
Leo
XIII
granted
the
request
in
1892
,
thus
making
the
Pontifical
College
Josephinum
the
only
pontifical
seminary
outside
of
Italy
.
