Description	These oil portraits of Platt Benedict (1777-1866) and his wife Sally DeForest Benedict (1777-1852) were painted in the 1840s. Both portraits measure 37" x 32" (93.98 x 81.28 cm). The Benedict family immigrated to Norwalk from Danbury, Connecticut in 1817, and were some of the first settlers of the city. Platt Benedict served as Norwalk's first mayor. In 1815, Benedict purchased 1300 acres in the Firelands, a half-million acres of land south of Lake Erie set aside by Congress as compensation to the residents of Norwalk, Connecticut, whose homes were burned by the British under Governor Tryon in 1779. He returned to the Firelands in 1817 and built a house. Sally Deforest Benedict brought a slip of ivy with her from her Connecticut home and planted starts around the new village.
