Description	This 8" x 10" (20.3 x 25.4 cm) photograph depicts a field in Paulding County, Ohio in the process of being cleared for farming. Paulding County was part of the Black Swamp, an area of northwestern Ohio from the Maumee River to Fort Wayne, Indiana that both American Indians and white settlers avoided because of its knee-deep mud and mosquitoes. Settlers began draining the swamp and clearing the large burr oak and American elm trees in the 1840s and 1850s. The process began with clearing the trees, but it often took years to remove the stumps and dig ditches to drain the water. A second 9" x 5.7" (23 x 12.7cm) depicts the Wheeler Brothers hoop and stave mill in Melrose, one of many businesses that thrived off the cheap lumber from the Black Swamp. This photograph is part of the O.B. Workman Collection, an extensive collection of photographs, sound recording tapes and manuscript materials collected by O.B. Workman (1908-1971) of Paulding County, Ohio. Workman's son donated the collection to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University in 1975.
