Description	These two quilts were made by Shelby County native Catherine Vandemark Wilson Cain (1826-1916). First is a patchwork quilt made with blue, pink, and red squares on green background. It measures 81" x 98" (205.74 x 248.92 cm). Catherine Wilson Cain lived in Houston, Ohio in Shelby County. She worked as a schoolteacher before marrying David Cain in 1855. The 27-star flag she made for her classroom is also included in the scrapbook. The second quilt shown here is an indigo quilt measuring 82.25" x 85.5" (208.91 x 217.17cm). This pieced cotton quilt was a gift from Cain to her eight-year-old granddaughter, Fay Aiken, in 1898. It is inscribed, "A Merry Christmas to Fay Aiken by her Grandma C.V. Cain 1898." The eight different blue and white cottons in the quilt were dyed with indigo, an expensive but resistant dye. Blue and white quilts were popular in the second half of the nineteenth century because of the availability of indigo-dyed cotton and the quilts' resemblance to woven coverlets of the pre-Civil War period. The quilts are part of the Feth Quilt Collection, which was donated to the Shelby County Historical Society by Josephine Feth, a descendant of the Cain and Aiken families.
