Description	Two advertisements and one article relating to John P. Parker's company, Phoenix Foundry, appeared in the Ripley Bee. The first advertisement ran on March 12, 1859, and describes work done at the foundry, which included building and repairing steam engines and agricultural tools, and cast metal parts. An article from May 23, 1886 is a testimonial to the skill and success of the Phoenix Foundry and its proprietors, Parker and Hood. A second advertisement, which appeared in 1871, emphasizes the availability of sugar mills. It lists Parker as sole proprietor. Parker (1827-1900) was born a slave in Virginia. He was trained in the iron manufacturing (foundry) business and was able to earn enough money to purchase his freedom. Parker settled in Ripley in 1845. Eventually, he established the Phoenix Foundry, one of the town's most prosperous businesses. Parker also invented and patented numerous agricultural tools, including a follower screw for a tobacco press, portable screw press, and soil pulverizer. Between 1845 and 1865, Parker aided approximately 400 slaves passing through Ripley on the Underground Railroad. He made dangerous nighttime trips to lead fugitive slaves from Kentucky across the Ohio River on their way to Canada. During the Civil War, Parker helped to recruit black soldiers to serve in the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.), the state's first African American regiment.
