Description	This illustration and text on the passenger pigeon was published in William Dawson's The Birds of Ohio: a Complete Scientific and Popular Description of the 320 Species of Birds Found in the State in 1903. The passenger pigeon, Ecopistes migratorius, was once the most numerous species of bird in North America and provided a seemingly endless supply of meat, fat, and feathers to early settlers. Contemporary observers described migrating flocks of passenger pigeons blackening the skies due to their large numbers. Later in the century, commercial hunting of passenger pigeons became popular. The growth of the railroads promoted pigeon hunting, since the trains could transport pigeon meat to major markets with no danger of spoilage. By the late 1880s, the decline in the passenger pigeon population became irreversible. It is now extinct. William Leon Dawson (1873-1928), an ornithologist and Congregational minister, created The Birds of Ohio: a Complete Scientific and Popular Description of the 320 Species of Birds Found in the State in 1903. Dawson was ordained at Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1899 and became the pastor at North Church in Columbus in 1900. He also published books about the birds of Florida and California.
