Description	These two photographs show the Perry Monument in Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio. The first image was taken in 1870 and measures 7" x 8.75" (17.8 x 22.23 cm). The second photograph shows Euclid Avenue in the background. It measures 4" x 3" (10.16 x 7.62 cm). The Perry Monument was designed by sculptor William Walcutt in 1860 to commemorate Oliver Hazard Perry's defeat of the British fleet at Put-in-Bay during the War of 1812. It stood in Cleveland's Public Square until 1892, when the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument was built. It was then moved to Wade Park, but relocated again to make way for the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was finally placed in Gordon Park on the lakefront. In 1929, however, the original was given to the city of Perrysburg, Ohio and a bronze replica was placed in Gordon Park. William Walcutt (1819-1882 or 1895), designer of the Perry Monument, was a native of Columbus, Ohio. He also painted a portrait of Alphonso Taft, father of William Howard Taft, which is included in the Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook.
