Description
This
peace
pipe
is
thought
to be the
one
that
Moses
Cleaveland
smoked
with
representatives
of the
Massasago
tribe
who
were
living
in
Conneaut
when
Cleaveland
led
the
first
Connecticut
Land
Company
surveying
party
into
Ohio's
Western
Reserve
area
in the
summer
of
1796
.
It
is
7
"
(17.8
cm)
long
and
lined
with
metal
. The
stem
is
carved
with the
neck
and
head
of an
animal
.
After
the
ceremonial
smoking
of the
pipe
,
Paqua
,
chief
of the
Massasagoes
,
gave
the
pipe
to
Cleaveland
,
along
with an
unusual
quillwork
tobacco
pouch
. The
buckskin
tobacco
pouch
is
decorated
on the
front
only
with
geometric
designs
and the
outline
of
two
figures
with
hands
joined
.
It
measures
8.75
"
x
8
"
(22.23
x
20.32
cm)
. In
return
for these
generous
gifts
,
Cleaveland
presented
him with "a
chain
of
wampum
,
silver
trinkets
, and
other
presents
, and
whiskey
, to the
amount
of
twenty-five
dollars.
"
Although
Cleaveland
described
the
Massasagoes
as
poor
and
begging
for
whiskey
,
another
account
describes
a
well-maintained
village
of
approximately
thirty
cabins
.
Moses
Cleaveland
(1754-1806)
,
Revolutionary
war
veteran
and
lawyer
of
Canterbury
,
Connecticut
,
invested
$32,600
in the
Connecticut
Land
Company
in
1795
. The
Connecticut
Land
Company
was
authorized
to
sell
land
in the
Western
Reserve
,
which
the
Connecticut
legislature
reserved
for its
citizens
in
1786
. In
preparation
for the
sale
,
Cleaveland
was
sent
to
survey
and
map
the
Reserve
.
Following
his
meeting
with the
Massasagoes
,
Cleaveland
continued
his
journey
to
survey
the
area
. On
July
22
,
1796
, he
laid
out
a
town
plan
for the "
capital
city
" of the
Western
Reserve
at the
mouth
of the
Cuyahoga
River
,
now
called
Cleveland
.
Cleaveland
returned
to his
home
in
Connecticut
in the
fall
and
never
returned
to the
Western
Reserve
.
