Description	These two photographs show Perkins Student Observatory at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. The dome housed a 9.5-inch refracting telescope that was manufactured in 1896. The observatory also contained a classroom, a small library, a transit telescope room, a flat observing roof, and a darkroom. The photographs measure 9.5" x 7.5" (24.13 x 19.05 cm). Dr. Hiram M. Perkins taught mathematics at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1873 until his retirement in 1907. Perkins, his wife Carrie Barkdull Perkins, and his sister gave money to build the Perkins Student Observatory near his home on West William Street in Delaware. Perkins made a fortune selling hogs to feed the Union Army during the Civil War. Devout Methodists, Perkins and his wife lived frugally, giving most of their assets to Ohio Wesleyan University. They also made a large contribution to support the Perkins Observatory (1924) on State Route 23 south. The observatory is on the National Register of Historic Places.
