Philomathean
Room
at
Otterbein
College
. The
first
literary
society
formed
at
Otterbein
College
was the
Otterbein
Lyceum
in
1851
. The
group
later
split
into
several
different
organizations
: the
Philomathean
and
Philophronean
were for
men
and the
Cleiorhetean
and the
Philalethean
were for
women
. The
societies
organized
and
hosted
debates
,
oratorical
contests
, and
recitations
. They also
formed
libraries
and
encouraged
musical
interests
.
When
Towers
Hall
was
erected
in
1871
, the
four
literary
societies
were
permitted
to
use
rooms
on the
third
floor
. The
rooms
were
elaborately
decorated
with
stenciled
walls
, and
stained
glass
windows
.
Membership
in the
literary
societies
declined
as
time
went
by,
especially
as
interest
in
fraternities
and
sororities
grew
. The
societies
completely
disbanded
by the
1930s
and
since
then the
rooms
have been
used
for
various
purposes
.
Only
the
Philomathean
remained
untouched
. In
1982
the
college
restored
the
room
to
honor
all
the
literary
societies
and their
contributions
to the
campus
. The
inscription
on the
wall
above
the
president's
chair
is
"
Quaerero
Nostrum
Studium
Est
" or "To
question
(inquire)
is
our
job.
" The
restoration
was
completed
in
1985
.
