An Ordinance Relative to Swine
To prevent Swine from running at large on the Town plat of
the Town of Athens
Section 1st Be it ordained and enacted, by the Select coun
=cil of the Town of Athens, That from and after the passage
of this Ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person or persons
to let their hogs run at large within the town plat of the town
of Athens, and every person so offending shall, for each offence
Fine be fined the sum of twenty five Cents for each Hog, so found
running at large.
Sectn 2nd Be it further ordained & enacted, that it shall
Marshal's be, and it is hereby made the duty of the Town Marshall,
duty to sell to the highest bidder, all such Swine that may be
found running at large within the town plat aforesaid; un=
=less he is satisfied that such swine belong without the limits
proviso of the town plat, provided that the owner or owners of such
Swine on satisfying the Marshal that they are his or their property
may have the privilege of redeeming the same previous to the
sale, on paying penalty required by the first section, and
securing such Swine, or within forty eight hours thereafter
on paying said penalty & Costs. ---
Hogs Sectn 3rd Be it further Ordained and enacted, that if
how the purchaser, or pururchasers of such Swine shall neglect or
sold refuse to have such Swine taken up and secured within two
& hours after the time of sale, he or they shall be subject to the fines
redeemed and forfietures of the first Section of this Ordinance ---
* Sectn 4 Be it further Ordained and enacted, that where
any Swine belonging to any person or persons without the town plat
Nonresident shall be sold by the Marshall by mistake, the purchasers shall
give up the same to the owner or owners on proof being made
Hogs that such swine are his or her property, and the marshall
shall refund the money to the purchaser, And the provisions
of this section shall be made known by the Marshall at the
time of making each Sale. ------
