Description	Nine photographs, all measuring 3.5" x 5.5" (8.89 x 13.97 cm), were taken in October 1960. They show various operations at an oil well in Helena, Ohio. The first photograph shows men bucking the tubing, a pipe with a thin diameter that will carry the oil to the top of the well. The next photograph shows the pulling unit, a portable mast winch, which pulls the rods from the well. Rods carry the drill bit into the well. Workers are unscrewing the casing, which are pipes of steel or concrete that have a large diameter, in the third photograph. The casing lines the well to keep the sides from collapsing. The fourth photograph shows the drive pipe, which is fourteen feet, six inches long, being pulled out of the well. The movement requires 1,400 pounds of pressure. The fifth photograph shows drilling a well. Drilling this particular well required 1,238 feet and five inches of tubing and rods. The first full joint of the well's casing is in the next photograph, while photograph number seven shows a hydraulic jack used to start casing. The eighth photograph shows the bottom of the casing, which has been shot off. Notice the irregular edge and the dark coating on the lower third of the casing. In the final photograph, the casing is pulled out of the well. Oil and natural gas in profitable quantities was discovered in Sandusky County, Ohio, in 1884. Between 1891 and 1899 more than 4,000 wells were dug, of which only 315 were dry. Most produced from 25 to 100 barrels per day. However, by 1909, the 4,200 wells in Sandusky County averaged one barrel per day.
