letter
,
Upton
asks
Vadae
Meekison
in
Napoleon
to
undertake
a
campaign
to have
local
granges
pass
resolutions
in
support
of
women's
suffrage
. In a
second
letter
,
Upton
suggests
working
with The
Ohio
Farmer
publication
to
introduce
farm
women
to the
suffrage
cause
. The
letters
are
two
pages
each
and

Harriet
Taylor
Upton
(1854-1945)
was
born
in
Ravenna
,
Ohio
and
lived
much
of her
life
in
Warren
,
Ohio
. She
served
as
treasurer
of the
National
Woman's
Suffrage
Association
and
coordinated
the
business
of the
association
from her
home
in
Warren
from
1903
to
1910
. In
1918
,
Upton
became
the
first
woman
appointed
to the
Warren
board
of
education
.
After
Congress
passed
the
19th
Amendment
in
1920
,
giving
women
the
right
to
vote
,
Upton
became
the
first
woman
to
serve
as
vice
chairman
of the
National
Executive
Committee
and
made
an
unsuccessful
run
for
Congress
. The
letters
are
part
of the
collection
of
Vadae
G
.
Meekison
(1884-1981)
,
who
was
born
in
West
Virginia
and
lived
in
Kansas
,
Michigan
, and
Indiana
before
moving
to
Ohio
with her
husband
George
. She
received
her
law
degree
from
Valparaiso
(Indiana)
University
and was
admitted
to the
Indiana
Bar
in
1907
.
When
she
began
her
law
practice
in
Napoleon
in
1926
, she
became
one
of the
first
women
to
practice
law
in
Henry
County
. She was a
critical
figure
in
Ohio's
women's
suffrage
movement
because
of her
work
as a
speaker
,
petitioner
, and
local
organizer
. Her
papers
also
include
personal
correspondence
and
form
letters
from
Ohio
Suffrage
Association
President
Harriet
Taylor
Upton
and
other
officers
,
describing
plans
for
pro-suffrage
campaign
strategy
and
lecture
tours
in
Henry
County
and
northwest
Ohio
.
