This
four-page
list
of
rules
of the
Ohio
Soldiers
' and
Sailors
'
Orphans
'
Home
was
included
in the
institution's
annual
report
for
1900
.
Staff
of the
home
were
instructed
to
treat
the
children
as
family
, and "
altercations
" were
forbidden
. The
report
was
included
in the
time
capsule
that was
placed
in the
cornerstone
of the
Greene
County
Courthouse
in
1901
.
It
measures
approximately
6.5
"
x
9.5
"
(16.51
x
24.13
cm)
. The
Soldiers
' and
Sailors
'
Orphans
'
Home
was
established
in
1869
to
care
for the
children
of
veterans
of the
Civil
War
. The
school
,
cottages
, and
other
buildings
were
built
just
south
of
Xenia
by
Cleveland
architect
Levi
Scofield
. The
home
closed
in
1995
. In
January
1901
, the
building
commission
overseeing
the
building
of the
new
Greene
County
Courthouse
asked
the
Masons
to
take
charge
of
ceremonies
to
commemorate
the
laying
of the
cornerstone
. A "
deposits
committee
" was
formed
to
collect
the
items
to be
buried
in a
small
copper
box
under
the
cornerstone
during
the
ceremonies
on
March
15
,
1901
. The
box
remained
buried
until
February
of
2001
,
when
it
was
recovered
and
opened
for the
centennial
ceremonies
on
March
15
,
2001
.
