Description	The Nut-shell: A Vest Pocket Library of Republican Facts is a collection of facts, statistics and quotes designed to present a positive picture of the U.S. economy at the end of President William McKinley's first administration. Designed as a campaign tool for his second presidential campaign in 1900, the booklet features prominent McKinley campaign slogans such as "A Full Dinner Pail" and "You Can Always Trust the People." The 3" by 5" (7.62 by 12.7 cm) booklet is 64 pages long; the first few pages are included here. Other portions not digitized include: "Our Labor Prospers-Under President McKinley's Wise Administration" "Our Merchant Marine-Why It Needs Greater Protection" "Our Farmers-When They Prosper...We All Prosper" "Our Banks-Show That People Are Successful" "Our Railroad Interests-Growing Steadily" "Our Foreign Trade-Increases Rapidly Under Republican Management" and "This and That--A Bundle of Items Interesting to the Voters." William McKinley (1843-1901), the twenty-fifth president of the United States, was born in Niles, Ohio. He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the Civil War and, after being mustered out, studied law and opened a law office in Canton, Ohio. McKinley served in the U.S. Congress for 14 years, and became president in 1897, largely due to the influence of Marcus Hanna, boss of the Cleveland political machine. McKinley was most noted for his foreign policy and the conduct of the Spanish-American War in 1898. It was during McKinley's administration that the U.S. acquired its first overseas possessions in the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. He was re-elected in 1900, but was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in 1901. His running mate, Theodore Roosevelt, then became president.
