Title	Notice to Sell the Wreck of the Canal Boat Fort Lawrence

Description	This notice informs the public that the remains of the Fort Lawrence, a canal boat from Bolivar, Ohio, will be sold on April 4, 1845. The boat sunk to the bottom of the canal near Massillon and had to be removed because it blocked the passage of other boats through the Ohio and Erie Canal. The notice is one page and measures 5" x 12" (12.7 x 30.48 cm). The first image is a draft of the proclamation; the second is the final copy. The Ohio and Erie Canal was built to connect Lake Erie at Cleveland with the Ohio River at Portsmouth in order to provide transportation and promote the state's economic development. Construction began in 1825, and the canal was officially opened between Cleveland and Akron on July 4, 1827. The entire canal was 308 miles long and required 146 locks. After 1850, canal use and maintenance declined as the use of railroad transportation increased. The Richard Howe Canal Collection is comprised of a number of handwritten notebooks containing notes on canal water measurements, observations of canals, and accounting information. Also present are maps, measured drawings of locks and bridges, a survey of the Miami River, drainage basin, correspondence and some later printed items. The bulk of the materials date from the 1830s through the 1840s.

Full Text	Notice Seized [inserted] as an obstruction [words "according to law" crossed out] a part of the old wreck of Canal Boat Fort Lawrence of Bolliver sunk to the Bottom of the Ohio Canal in the Village of Masillon near the head of the [illegible] Basin - and will be sold according to Law on Thurs day 4th day of Apr. next Between the hours of 10 o'clock in the forenoon & 4 in the afternoon. March 26th 1865
