Description	Nettie E. Wheeler, the first librarian at the Elyria Public Library, kept this diary. In it, she discusses the day the library opened and her other duties, including making a carpet for the library's office. The diary is approximately 100 pages in length and measures 2.5" x 3.5" (6.35 x 8.89 cm). Selections are digitized here. Nettie Wheeler was born in Norwich, New York and moved to Elyria, Ohio when she was seven years old. She attended Ingham University in Le Roy, New York. On March 23, 1870, she was appointed librarian at the Elyria Public Library. She worked six days a week processing books, checking them out for patrons, and creating a library catalog. In March 1873, a fire at the library destroyed all but 375 books. The library re-opened in 1874 and Nettie was given a salary of $25 a month. Nettie Wheeler married Carlos M. Fisher of Elyria in 1883 and resigned her position as librarian. She died on October 7, 1884.
