Description
The
bank
barn
was the
second
building
constructed
on the
campus
of the
Ohio
Agricultural
Experiment
Station
in
Wooster
.
Built
into the
side
of a
hill
,
bank
barns
had
two
levels
,
both
of
which
could
be
entered
from the
ground
.
Animals
were
generally
kept
on the
lower
level
,
while
the
upper
one
served
as a
threshing
floor
and
storage
area
. This
barn
,
built
by
craftsman
John
Starn
of
Smithville
,
Ohio
in
1893
, was
230
feet
long
,
48
feet
wide
, and
60
feet
high
. The
roof
above
the
upper-level
entrance
(shown
in the
photograph)
displayed
"
OAES
1894
"
while
the
other
bore
the
words
"
Ohio
Agricultural
Experiment
Station.
" The
bank
barn
was
used
for
conducting
experiments
until
1964
,
when
it
was
razed
to
make
room
for
Gerlaugh
Hall
. The
photograph
of the
barn
,
dated
from
around
1897
,
measures

Lumber
to
build
the
barn
came
from the
area
that
is
now
Secrest
Arboretum
. A
second
photograph
shows
workers
who
were
involved
with
cutting
trees
and
measures

. These
images
are
part
of an
extensive
collection
of
photographs
,
tools
, and
artifacts
dealing
with the
history
of the
OARDC
. In
1882
, the
Ohio
State
University
established
an
experiment
station
to
bolster
its
agriculture
program
,
which
critics
charged
was
being
shortchanged
by a
shift
towards
liberal
arts
education
.
Charles
Thorne
,
who
had
led
the
campaign
for a
separate
station
,
became
its
first
director
. The
Hatch
Act
of
1887
, a
federal
act
that
provided
funding
for
experiment
stations
, was a
response
to the
land-grant
universities
'
abandonment
of their
agricultural
and
mechanical
roots
. In
1892
, the
experiment
station
moved
from
Columbus
to
Wooster
in
Wayne
County
.
Researchers
there
worked
with
farmers
around
the
state
improve
crop
yields
,
animal
nutrition
,
animal
husbandry
, and
pest
control
. In
1965
the
name
was
changed
to the
Ohio
Agricultural
Research
and
Development
Center
. The
OARDC
and
Ohio
State
University
officially
merged
in
1981
.
