her
work

1876
Philadelphia
Centennial
Exposition
. For a
time
, she
conducted
under-the
glaze
techniques
at the

1880
, her
father
agreed
to
finance
a
pottery
,
which
she
named
"
Rookwood
" in
honor
of her
father's
estate
. In the
pottery's
early
years
,
Nichols
produced
Japanese-inspired
pieces
, and
Rookwood
offered
classes
in
molding
and
china
painting
.
Students

accepted
into these
classes
on a
competitive
basis

developed
many

firing
techniques
that
made
the
pottery
a
commercial
success
. In
1883
,
Mrs
.
Nichols
hired
William
Watts
Taylor
to
run
the
pottery
. He
reorganized
Rookwood
and
expelled
the
pottery
club
.
Mrs
.
Nichols
first
husband
died
in
1885
; she
later
married
Bellamy
Storer
, a
lawyer
and
politician
.
Devoting
more
energy
to her
husband's
political
career
, she
spent
less
time
at the
pottery
.
After
Storer
was
elected
to the
U
.
S
.
House
of
Representatives
, she
turned
over
her
share
in the
pottery
to
Taylor
,
who
moved
the
pottery
to a
new
building
in
Cincinnati's
Mt
.
Adams
neighborhood
.
Mrs
.
Storer
continued
to
make
pottery
,
however
, and
introduced
bronze
elements
to her
work
. In
1902
, she
won
a
medal
at the
Paris
Universal
Exposition
.
Although
she
is
primarily
known
