Description
These
three
photographs
are of the
area
that
is
believed
to be the
site
of the
Battle
of the
Olentangy
near
Bucyrus
in
Crawford
County
. The
battle
occurred
during
the
retreat
of
Colonel
William
Crawford
during
the
Sandusky
Expedition
in
June
1782
,
before
Ohio
became
a
state
.
Crawford
County
was
named
after
Colonel
Crawford
. The

cm)
photographs
were
taken
by
Parker
B
.
Brown
in
1989
. The
Battle
of
Olentangy
took
place
on
June
6
,
1782
as
Crawford
led
a
combined
force
of
Pennsylvanians
and
Virginians
in an
attack
on
Mingo
and
Delaware
Indians
along
the
Sandusky
River
.
Crawford
and his
men
managed
to
fight
off
the
combined
Indian
and
British
forces
. The
American
army
suffered
approximately
50
casualties
. The
following
day
, the
Battle
of
Sandusky
took
place
, and as the
American
forces
were
divided
,
Crawford
and
many
of his
men
were
captured
by the
Indians
.
Because
the
Indians
associated
Crawford's
men
with those
participating
in the
Gnadenhutten
Massacre
,
which
resulted
in the
deaths
of
90
American
Indian
men
,
women
, and
children
,
Crawford
was
tortured
and
burned
at the
stake
.
