Description	These three photographs are of the area that is believed to be the site of the Battle of the Olentangy near Bucyrus in Crawford County. The battle occurred during the retreat of Colonel William Crawford during the Sandusky Expedition in June 1782, before Ohio became a state. Crawford County was named after Colonel Crawford. The 4" x 6" (10.16 x 15.24 cm) photographs were taken by Parker B. Brown in 1989. The Battle of Olentangy took place on June 6, 1782 as Crawford led a combined force of Pennsylvanians and Virginians in an attack on Mingo and Delaware Indians along the Sandusky River. Crawford and his men managed to fight off the combined Indian and British forces. The American army suffered approximately 50 casualties. The following day, the Battle of Sandusky took place, and as the American forces were divided, Crawford and many of his men were captured by the Indians. Because the Indians associated Crawford's men with those participating in the Gnadenhutten Massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 90 American Indian men, women, and children, Crawford was tortured and burned at the stake.
