and
disabled
from
polio
as a
child
.
It
also
tells
of
everyday
life
in
rural
Champaign
County
and the
village
of
Mechanicsburg
:
friends
,
family
, and
events
both
big
and
small
.

a
selection
of
Crim's
poems
at the

of the
narrative
, are
included
here.
Crim
(1876-1963)
was
born
in
rural
Champaign
County
near
the
Union
County
line
.
Although
she was
born
blind
in
one
eye
,
neither
she
nor
her
family
regarded
it
as a
handicap
. At the
age
of
13
she
contracted
polio
,
which
, in the
early
1890s
was
treated
with
full
body
casts
,
moist
heat
treatments
, and
physical
therepy
.
Crim's
family
supported
her, with her
mother
giving
her the
heat
therapy
and her
brother
,
Sam
,
making
pulleys
for the
movement
of her
legs
.
When
she
got
her
wheelchair
, she
began
to
visit
those
who
sought
her
calming
spirit
when
they were
ill
or
dying
. She also
took
care
of
many
children
, and was
known
throughout
her
community
as a
selfless
caregiver
who
could
be
depended
upon
to
nurse
and
tend
as
needed
, or
simply
sit
by the
sick
or
dying
. As a
result
of her
continued
self-discipline
and
support
by her
family
,
Maggie
Crim
was
able
to
get
around
on
crutches
by the
time
she was in her
early
twenties
. At
age
23
she
returned
to
school
as a
student
and
teacher
. She
went
on to
take
classes
in
music
at
Wittenburg
University
, a
round
trip
of
nearly
fifty
miles
, for
classes
in
storytelling
,
games
,
business
,
folk
dancing
,
music
history
, and
drama
. She
wrote
poetry
,
much
of
which
she
included
in her
autobiography
. In
July
,
1921
,
Trinity
Methodist
Church
wanted
to
raise
funds
for their
Sunday
School
and they
asked
Crim
to
help
with the
entertainment
.
Using
Joseph
Ware's
book
"
Mechanicsburg
,
Yesterday
and
Today
:
History
of
Mechanicsburg
" she
set
about
creating
a
theatrical
pageant
. The
whole
community
came
together
to
work
under
her
direction
, and with
more
than
300
community
"
actors
"
it
was a
marvelous
success
.
According
to
Crim's
account
, the
only
thing
major
problem
was that a
movie
company
who
planned
to
film
the
pageant
thought
that
it
would
run
for
two
evenings
. By the
time
they
arrived
with their
cameras
, they had
missed
the
whole
thing
. The
gate
receipts
, at the
rate
of
35
cents
per
adult
and
15
cents
per
child
,
totaled
over
a
thousand
dollars
.
