photographs
document
the
flooding
that
occurred
in
Marietta
in
1936
. The
images
show
downtown
Marietta
businesses
including
a
bowling
alley
,
hat
shop
,
restaurant
, and
watch
repair
shop
.
People
can
be
seen
on
second
floors
and
traveling
by
small
boats
. The
first
five
show
the
flooding
on
March
20th
, the
sixth
was
taken
on
March
21
,
1936
. In
March
1936
heavy
rains
causes
rivers
and
tributaries
to
overflow
causing
widespread
flooding
from the
northeast
down
through
the
Midwest
.
Floodwaters
from
Pittsburgh
,
Pennsylvania
, were
carried
down
the
Ohio
River
,
through
the
Ohio
Valley
. In
preparation
for the
coming
floods
,
many
Marietta
businesses
moved
to
higher
ground
, and the
Marietta
fire
department
prepared
a
station
at the
Marietta
College
field
house
in
case
the
main
station
was
flooded
. The
full
fire
department
was
prepared
to be on
hand
until
the
flooding
was
over
. On
March
20
the
water
reached
the
48-foot
crest
stage
.
Floodwaters
receded
quickly
in the
evening
and
Works
Progress
Administration
laborers
were
added
city
street
forces
to
aid
in
clean-up
. On
March
28
the
river
crested
again
at
40.4
feet
as a
result
of
another
heavy
rainstorm
.
Two
hundred
people
died
as a
result
of the
flooding
in the
Ohio
Valley
and
damage
exceeded
250
million
dollars
.
