Description
There were
thirty
temperance
societies
in
Ohio
by
1829
. The
Lower
Sandusky
Temperance
Society
formed
in
1839
in
Lower
Sandusky
,
now
known
as
Fremont
. This
6.5
"
x
7.75"(16.5
x
19.7
cm)
volume
consists
of
about
twenty
handwritten
pages
. The
society's
constitution
reflects
the
belief
that "the
use
of
alcoholic
liquors
, as a
beverage
, to
families
,
individuals
and
communities
[produces]..
.
evil
effects
too
palpable
to be
denied
by any
person
of
observation
and
correct
principles
, And that a
thorough
suppression
of this
vice
should be the
aim
of
every
person
who
regards
the
welfare
of his
fellow
men
" Of the
205
signatures
of the
membership
roster
,
126
were
men
and
79
were
women
.
Interestingly
,
one
of the
original
members
of the
society
,
Ezra
Williams
,
is
mentioned
in
H
.
Z
.
Williams
'
History
of
Sandusky
County
(1882)
as
having
operated
a
prosperous
still
in
Fremont
from
1827
to
1837
.
Another
document
,
entitled
"
American
Pledge
"
bears
55
male
and
48
female
signatures
and
reads
: "
We
agree
not to
use
intoxicating
drinks
as a
beverage
,
nor
traffic
in them,
nor
provide
them at
our
entertainments
,
nor
for the
persons
in
our
employ
; but in
all
suitable
ways
to
discountenance
their
use.
"
