Description	This form for basket-making was used to make Longaberger baskets. Also included is a completed Longaberger basket. Both are from the 1970's and measure approximately 12" x 26" x 18" (30.48 x 66.04 x 45.72 cm). J. W. Longaberger moved to Dresden, Ohio in 1896 and took a job at the nearby Dresden Basket Factory, where he learned the art of tight basket weaving. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Dresden Basket Factory went out of business and Longaberger was forced to seek alternate occupations. Despite this, he spent much of his spare time making baskets. In 1936, J. W. and his wife Bonnie purchased the Dresden Basket Company and renamed it the Ohio Ware Basket Company, because the baskets were used to carry pottery ware, a successful industry in the region at the time. The Longabergers had twelve children. Their son Dave established the Longaberger Company. In the 1970s, Dave Longaberger noticed that baskets were extremely popular in retail stores and that the imported baskets being sold were doing remarkably well. Seeing a business opportunity, Dave asked his father to manufacture twelve market baskets and took them to a local town to be sold. The baskets sold immediately and more were ordered. Shortly after his father's death in 1976, Dave opened J. W.'s Hand-Woven Baskets in Dresden, Ohio. He realized that the best way to sell his baskets was not through retail stores but by home shows in which an educated Longaberger associate would explain the history and construction of the baskets. The Longaberger Basket Company, located in Newark, Ohio, became one of the premier manufacturers of handmade baskets in the United States.
