This
is
the
souvenir
program
for the
dedication
of the
Erie
Avenue
Bascule
and
Central
High
Level
bridges
in
Lorain
,
Ohio
. The
dedication
took
place
on
September
25th
,
1940
.
It
contains
a
brief
history
of
bridges
in
Lorain
, as
well
as a
program
of
events
. The
ten-page
program
measures
5.75
"
x
8
"
(14.61
x
20.32
cm)
. The
Erie
Avenue
Bascule
Bridge
, a
balanced
drawbridge
that
is
opened
by
sinking
the
counterbalance
and
thus
lifting
the
footway
into the
air
,
is
the
bridge
closest
to
Lake
Erie
in
Lorain
.
It
carries
Ohio
Route
6
(Lake
Road)
over
the
Black
River
.
It
was
re-named
the
Charles
Berry
Memorial
Bridge
to
honor
World
War
II
Medal
of
Honor
recipient
Charles
Berry
.
Corporal
Berry
was
killed
in
action
on
March
3
,
1945
at
Iwo
Jima
,
when
he
saved
his
comrades
from a
live
Japanese
hand
grenade
that
landed
in their
foxhole
by
throwing
himself
on
it
. For this
act
, he was
posthumously
awarded
the
Medal
of
Honor
on
December
7
,
1945
. The
Central
High
Level
Bridge
,
which
is
large
enough
for
freighters
to
pass
underneath
,
carries
Ohio
Route
611
over
the
Black
River
in
Lorain
,
Ohio
.
It
was
re-named
the
Lofton
Henderson
Memorial
Bridge
to
honor
a
local
man
killed
in
service
during
World
War
II
.
Henderson
(1903-1942)
was
shot
down
by a
Japanese
plane
in the
Pacific
during
the
Battle
of
Midway
on
June
4
,
1942
. As his
last
act
of
valor
, he
guided
his
wounded
aircraft
into the
smokestack
of a
Japanese
aircraft
carrier
,
destroying
the
enemy
vessel
in the
resulting
explosion
. For this
act
he was
posthumously
awarded
the
Navy
Cross
.
