Description	These two photographs show the Lithuanian Cultural Garden, which was dedicated in 1936, when a bust of Dr. Jonas Basanavicius, the first president of the Lithuanian Republic, was unveiled. The bust was given to the city by the government of Lithuania. The garden is shaped like a lyre in honor of the Lithuanian love for music. The stonework portrays Lithuanian history from the unification of its three provinces to its rebirth after World War I. These photographs measure 7" x 9.5" (17.78 x 24.13 cm) and 6.25" x 9.5" (15.88 x 24.13 cm). Lithuanians first arrived in Cleveland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and served as a source of cheap labor for the city's industries. The second wave of Lithuanians arrived in Cleveland in post-World War II after Russia took control of Lithuania. Many of the second-wave immigrants believed that the Soviet Union would not control Lithuania long and thus focused efforts on preserving Lithuanian culture in Cleveland and also lobbying to free their homeland. After Lithuania received independence in the early 1990s, political leaders from Lithuania traveled to Cleveland to acknowledge the importance of the lobbying efforts for Lithuanian freedom. The Cleveland Cultural Gardens, located along East Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, are landscaped gardens with statuary honoring Cleveland's ethnic groups. During the dedication of the Shakespeare Garden in 1916, it was decided that similar sites should be prepared for each of the city's ethnic communities. The first of these gardens, the Hebrew garden, was established in 1926. On May 9, 1927 the city set aside areas of Rockefeller Park for future gardens. The Italian, German, Lithuanian, Slovak, and Ukrainian gardens were established in 1930; the Polish, Hungarian, Czech, and Yugoslav gardens in 1934; and the American, Russian, Irish, Greek, and Syrian gardens in 1938. Romanian, Estonian, Afro-American, Chinese, Finnish, and Indian gardens have since been created. Planning and fundraising for each garden was undertaken within the ethnic communities, while the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation (established in 1925) oversaw planning and coordinated various joint programs.
