was
known
for her
commitment
to
Methodism
and
temperance
. Her
charity
and
kindness
endeared
her to the
public
, and in
particular
, the
men
of her
husband's
Civil
War
regiment
, the
23rd
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
(O.V.I.)
,
which
gave
her the
nickname
"
Our
Mother.
"
Cincinnati
Wesleyan
College
,
which
was
affiliated
with the
Methodist
Episcopal
Church
,
claimed
to be the
first
chartered
college
for
women
. The
program
from the
memorial
service
is
44
pages
long
and
measures
approximately
5
by
7.5
inches
(12.70
by
19.05
cm)
.
Lucy
Hayes
,
born
on
August
28
,
1831
in
Chillicothe
,
Ohio
, was the
first
wife
of a
president
to be
called
"
First
Lady
" and the
first
to have
graduated
from
college
. As
First
Lady
, she
banned
the
serving
of
alcohol
in the
White
House
,
giving
her the
nickname
"
Lemonade
Lucy.
" A
strong
anti-slavery
supporter
,
Lucy
worked
for
many
social
causes
,
including
scholarships
for
American
Indians
and
donations
for the
poor
.
When
Congress
banned
children
from
rolling
out
their
Easter
eggs
on the
grounds
of the
Capitol
,
Lucy
invited
the
children
to the
White
House
. The
tradition
continues
today
.
