Abraham
Lincoln's
funeral
procession
,
which
traveled
by
railroad
. The
train
carried
president's
body
across
Ohio
from
Cleveland
through
New
London
to
Columbus
in
1865
. The
first
photograph
shows
the
Nashville
, the
train's
engine
. The
Louisville
,
shown
in the
second
photograph
,
ran
ten
minutes
ahead
of the
funeral
train
as a
precaution
.
Both
engines
belonged
to the
Cleveland
,
Columbus
and
Cincinnati
Railroad
.
After
President
Lincoln
was
assassinated
in
1865
, his
body
was
sent
back
to
Springfield
,
Illinois
for
burial
. The
1650-mile
route
from
Washington
D.C
. to
Springfield
ran
through
Ohio
from
Erie
,
Pennsylvania
to
Cleveland
,
south
to
Columbus
, and
west
to
Indianapolis
.
Along
the
way
,
mourners
lined
the
tracks
and
special
services
were
held
. On
April
28
, the
train
stopped
in
Cleveland
,
where
100,000
mourners
paid
their
respects
.
