Description	These three photographs document the oil industry in Lima, Ohio around 1901. The first two photographs show oil derricks, tall frame structures that supported drilling equipment, around the outskirts of the city. Once the oil was pumped from the wells, it was stored in large wooden tanks, shown in the next photograph. These tanks held 35,000 barrels each. The danger of fire was always a problem, however, as shown in the final photograph of an oil tank fire. Upon the discovery of oil in Findlay in 1885, the industry quickly expanded to Lima. Benjamin C. Faurot, a Lima businessman, drilled for natural gas on the grounds of the Lima Straw Board Works. Although Faurot and others were disappointed at the lack of natural gas, they found oil. At first it was believed to be unusable, since the oil appeared thin and contained a foul odor. Another company formed, however, called the Citizens Gas Works. It began drilling two wells and sent the oil to be tested by experts, who determined the oil could be refined. In 1886, Standard Oil built a refinery on the farm of H.A. Hoover in Shawnee Township. Solar Refining Company, as the Standard Oil subsidiary was known, expanded for several years before the oil supply dwindled. Oil production in Allen County peaked in 1904, with an estimated 24, 667, 320 barrels. The oil business brought wealth to the region and led to the establishment schools, businesses and neighborhoods. These images were published in Picturesque Northwestern Ohio and Battle Grounds of the Maumee Valley: An Art and Historical Work of the Northwest Section of the Buckeye State in 1901. The book measures 11" x 14" (27.9 x 35.56 cm).
