Description	These three 5" x 7" (12.7 x 17.8 cm) photographs show employees of the Lima Machine Works. Employees of the machine shop included: (back row) Robert Apples, unknown, John King, David R. Mumaugh, and Paul Agerter. George Kellemier is in the sixth row on the left, and John Mumaugh and A. Oliphant are in the fifth row, fourth and fifth from the left. The second photograph shows employees of the foundry. Foreman John Burgoyne is shown in the first row on the right and John Nuce, a moulder, is in the middle of the first row. Workers in the blacksmith shop, shown in the third photograph, include John Mack and George Mack, second and third from the left in the middle row. In the back row are Levi Shaffer, Charles Hempel, and Riley Smith. As the Lima Machine Works expanded in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the company employed thousands of workers. It was not uncommon for entire families to work at the plant. Irish, Polish, Italian, German and Serbian immigrants found jobs at Lima Machine Works. The company demonstrated its paternalism when, in 1910, it instituted a policy where sons of deceased employees were assured employment as soon as they were old enough to work (fourteen or fifteen years old). Lima Locomotive Works began in 1869 when a group of men from Upper Sandusky purchased the Lima Agricultural Company, renamed it the Lima Machine Works, and began making sawmill machinery, stationary steam engines, boilers, jig saws, lathes, and agricultural equipment. In 1878, it expanded its operations to include the production of locomotives. The company, which employed 4,000 workers in its peak production years during World War II, was the third largest producer of locomotives in the country. The "Cadillac of steam-locomotive builders" as the company was known, also manufactured cranes, draglines, and shovels.
