Description	These images show the bedrock of Hancock County. The first image shows a large gray stone is "Findlay material" from the Greenfield Formation. The second image represents "Carey material" from the Lockport Formation. It includes calcite crystals and the white areas are made of gypsum. These two examples of bedrock date from the Silurian Age (438-408 million years ago). At the beginning of Silurian time, Ohio was dry land subject to erosion. Slowly warm, shallow seas returned. In the middle of the Silurian time reef environments developed as the seas became deeper and covered Ohio. The seas grew shallow in the Late Silurian period and evaporite (salt-bearing) basins formed in northern Ohio. Life forms from this period include coral reefs, echinoderms, clams, brachiopods, and cephalopods. Conditions in the Silurian Age created the limestone, dolomite, and sandstone that made it possible for the later oil and gas industries to flourish. Other products produced include crushed stone for construction and cement, aglime, road salt (salt); and wallboard (gypsum).
