Description	This photograph, taken by Arthur Trory, shows the Kent Base Ball Club of 1897. Pictured are, front row: Joe Denning (outfield), Harry Hunt (third base), Jim "Serppy" Stevens; middle row: Bill Bailey (second base), Elmer France (manager and first base), Ernest Denning (short stop), Robert "Bob" Spade (pitcher); back row: John Paxton, Paddy Livingston, Bill Ganze, Claud Davis (secretary and treasurer), Jack Bracken (pitcher), Danny Potts (pitcher), and Frank Maskery (Business Manager). The photograph measures 14" x 11" (35.56 x 27.9 cm). Baseball began in the United States in the 1840s and 1850s in New York. During the Civil War, Union soldiers introduced the game to other soldiers from remote regions of the country. When the war ended, baseball clubs grew across the U.S. The National League of Professional Baseball formed in 1876 to formalize professional baseball, but amateur baseball remained popular. Arthur Trory (1879-1967) was born in Lyons, Ohio, the youngest of four children of English immigrants. He attended grammar school in Wauseon, Ohio and later studied pharmacy at Ohio Northern University. He worked as a pharmacist in Ashland, Medina, and Cleveland before moving to Kent. Trory retired from business in 1949. These photographs are part of the Arthur Trory Collection at Kent State University. Trory was an avid photographer who received his first camera at the age of ten. His photographs depict the Kent and Brady Lake area from 1895 to 1927, including the Kent Opera House, Brady Lake icehouse, factories, bridges and street scenes. Although an amateur, Trory's works are notable for their artistry and unique composition.
