Baseball
began
in the
United
States
in the
1840s
and
1850s
in
New
York
.
During
the
Civil
War
,
Union
soldiers
introduced
the
game
to
other
soldiers
from
remote
regions
of the
country
.
When
the
war
ended
,
baseball
clubs
grew
across
the
U.S
. The
National
League
of
Professional
Baseball
formed
in
1876
to
formalize
professional
baseball
, but
amateur
baseball
remained
popular
.
Arthur
Trory
(1879-1967)
was
born
in
Lyons
,
Ohio
, the
youngest
of
four
children
of
English
immigrants
. He
attended
grammar
school
in
Wauseon
,
Ohio
and
later
studied
pharmacy
at
Ohio
Northern
University
. He
worked
as a
pharmacist
in
Ashland
,
Medina
, and
Cleveland
before
moving
to
Kent
.
Trory
retired
from
business
in
1949
. These
photographs
are
part
of the
Arthur
Trory
Collection
at
Kent
State
University
.
Trory
was an
avid
photographer
who
received
his
first
camera
at the
age
of
ten
. His
photographs
depict
the
Kent
and
Brady
Lake
area
from
1895
to
1927
,
including
the
Kent
Opera
House
,
Brady
Lake
icehouse
,
factories
,
bridges
and
street
scenes
.
Although
an
amateur
,
Trory's
works
are
notable
for their
artistry
and
unique
composition
.
