Description	Ralph Solonitz, a student at Kent State University from 1968 to 1970, was present at the shootings on May 4, 1970 and took these 4" x 6" (10.16 cm x 15.24 cm) color photographs of the events he witnessed. Solonitz labeled the first photograph, "May 4th - after the shootings, students in a state of shock, sitting, standing, surrounded by the National Guard. I hear students say 'Go home, get back to your dorms, they're going to charge again!'" About the second he wrote, "Photo just below Blanket Hill - Taylor Hall is on left out of view." Solonitz labeled the final photograph, "Near the Victory Bell. View of Van Deusen Bldg. Wooden bldgs - in foreground." Solonitz graduated from KSU in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in fine arts. He opened his own advertising agency in 1975 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Kent State University in Kent, Ohio was placed in an international spotlight after a tragic end to a student demonstration against the Vietnam War and the National Guard on May 4, 1970. Shortly after noon on that Monday, 13 seconds of rifle fire by a contingent of 28 Ohio National Guardsmen left four students dead, one permanently paralyzed, and eight others wounded. Not every student was a demonstration participant or an observer; some students were walking to and from class. As a result of the shootings, the university was closed for nearly six weeks.
