Description	Major General Joseph T. Dickman delivered this commencement address at the July 1923 commencement exercises at the University of Dayton. He discusses national security issues, the importance of a reserve army, and hopes for the establishment of the League of Nations. This speech was printed in the commencement issue of the Exponent magazine. The University of Dayton awarded Dickman an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1923. The address is followed by a biographical sketch and photograph of Dickman. Six pages of the Exponent relating to Dickman are included here. It measures 9" x 12" (22.86 x 30.48 cm). Dickman (1857-1927) was born in Dayton, Ohio and briefly attended high school at St. Mary's Institute (currently the University of Dayton) in 1871. He won a scholarship to the United States Military Academy at West Point and became a distinguished military leader. The culmination of his military career was as commander of the Third Army during World War I, best known for its successful participation in the second battle of the Marne. After the war ended, he was named head of the Army of Occupation.
