Description	Cincinnati artist John Rettig kept this account book documenting his expenses and pay for work, including painting residences, buildings such as the First National Bank in Ironton, and sets for productions of Othello and Cinderella. It is 432 pages long and measures 10" x 15" (25.4 x 38.1 cm). Seven pages are included here. Rettig (1858-1932) was born in Cincinnati and attended night classes at the Cincinnati School of Design while working as a fresco painter. After graduating in 1881, Retting worked on projects such as a fresco scheme for the Masonic Temple and the 1883 transformation of the Cincinnati Music Hall from concert auditorium to opera house. In the late nineteenth century, Rettig developed a series of pageants that were said to be "the greatest open-air historical spectacles in the world." The first of such pageants was performed in 1886 and was called The Fall of Babylon, which had a 400-foot stage, hundreds of cast members, chariot races, electric lighting, and fireworks. Subsequent projects included Rome Under Nero, Rhodopsis, or Cinderella in Egypt, Montezuma, or the Conquest of Mexico, and The Secret of the Sphinx. Some of Rettig's work was later performed by the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Rettig changed his focus in the early 1900s to easel painting after moving to the Dutch fishing village of Volendam.
