Description	John Patterson Green (1845-1940), the first African American elected to the Ohio senate, wrote this request to the Cleveland City Council in 1877. Green, as justice of the peace, petitioned for a civil docket to hear cases on. Green was one of Cleveland's first African American attorneys. This one-page document measures 8" x 5" (20.32 x 12.7 cm). Born in New Berne, North Carolina, Green moved to Cleveland with his family in 1857. He attended Central High School in Cleveland and Union Law School. As justice of the peace in Cleveland (1873-1882), he became the first African American elected to public office in the city. He served in the Ohio legislature from 1890 to 1894. As a friend of Marcus Hanna and other Ohio Republicans, Green was appointed U.S. postage stamp agent in 1897 and served in that position until 1905.
