Newcomer
wrote
this
autobiographical
sketch
for his
children
: "that they
may
learn
, from
my
own
hand
,
something
in
regard
to the
biography
,
natural
turn
of
mind
and
tastes
of their
father.
"
Newcomer
was a
newspaper
editor
and
publisher
. He
took
an
apprenticeship
with the
Fulton
Democrat
in
Delta
,
Ohio
in
1852
, and then
began
publishing
his
own
paper
.
Between
1854
and
1865
, he
published
several
papers
in
Wauseon
,
Delta
,
Port
Clinton
, and
Marion
. A
Democrat
,
Newcomer
did
not
support
Lincoln
in the
1860
or
1864
elections
. In
December
of
1864
, he was
roused
from his
bed
by
Union
soldiers
stationed
at
Johnson's
Island
and
arrested
for
opposing
the
Lincoln
administration
and
supporting
the
Democratic
candidate
Clement
L
.
Vallandingham
for
governor
of
Ohio
in
1863
.
Vallandingham
, the
leader
of the
pro-southern
"
Copperheads
"
during
the
Civil
War
, was
arrested
by the
Union
military
authorities
in
1863
for
treasonable
utterances
, and
banished
to the
Confederate
States
.
Newcomer
ran
for
public
office
in his
later
years
and was
eventually
appointed
Trustee
of the
Industrial
Home
for
Girls
at
White
Sulphur
Springs
(near
Delaware
,
Ohio)
. In the
sketch
,
Newcomer
recounts
his
grief
at the
death
of his
first
wife
, his
love
for his
children
, and his
political
philosophy
. He also
transcribes
his
phrenological
chart
acquired
from a
phrenologist
,
showing
the
belief
in the
pseudoscience
of the
time
. The
autobiography
ends
with his
appointment
as
Trustee
of the
Industrial
Home
for
Girls
in
1875
. The
