Three
photographs

surveying
equipment
that
belonged
to
James
Kilbourn
,
one
of the
proprietors
of the
Scioto
Company
.
First
is
a
wooden
box
that
measures
14.5
by
7.5
by
7.5
inches
(36.83
by
19.05
by
19.05
cm)
.
It
contains
a
brass
compass
magnet
,
which
is
14
inches
(35.56
cm)
long
. The
diameter
of the
dial
is
6
inches
(15.24
cm)
. The
second
photograph
shows
Kilbourn's
staff
and
scope
. On the
left
is
the
wood
and
brass
staff
that
held
the
compass
.
It
is
54
inches
(137.16
cm)
long
and has a
6
inch
(15.24
cm)
circumference
at its
widest
point
. On the
right
is
a
scope
,
which
was
used
to
see
long
distances
.
It
is
32
inches
long
and
approximately
2
inches
(5.08
cm)
in
diameter
.
Finally
, the
chain
is
30
feet
(9.14
meters)
long
.
James
Kilbourn
(1770-1850)
was a
leader
in the
Scioto
Company
,
which
consisted
of
forty
subscribers
from
Connecticut
and
Massachusetts
who
settled
in
central
Ohio
.
Kilbourn
served
in the
U
.
S
.
Congress
and the
Ohio
House
of
Representatives
. In
1809
,
Kilbourn
presented
an
unsuccessful
petition
to have
Worthington
declared
the
capital
of
Ohio
. He was also a
businessman
,
founding
the
Worthington
Manufacturing
Company
,
which
made
woolen
uniforms
for the
army
during
the
War
of
1812
using
imported
merino
sheep
.
Like
many
others
,
Kilbourn
lost
his
fortune
during
the
panic
of
1819
. He
remained
active
as a
land
speculator
,
bank
director
,
surveyor
, and
militia
leader
.
