Description	This wooden campaign chest belonged to General James B. McPherson, the highest-ranking Union officer to be killed in the Civil War. The campaign chest includes five bottles and a board with wooden cup molds to keep the cups in place. The chest measures 12" x 17" (30.48 x 43.18 cm). James Birdseye McPherson was born in Clyde, Ohio in 1828. He graduated from West Point at the top of his class in 1853, stayed on an additional year to teach, then worked as an engineer. During the Civil War he served as aide-de-camp to General Halleck and chief engineer under Ulysses S. Grant. He quickly moved up the ranks, and after distinguishing himself at the battle of Vicksburg, was promoted to major general. While leading his troops into battle, McPherson was struck by one of the opening shots of the battle of Atlanta. He died on July 22, 1864.
