Description	These eight photographs illustrate the Hotel Victory, one of the largest hotels in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Two photographs measuring 10" x 5.8" (25.4 x 14.73 cm) and 6.5" x 4.5" (16.51 x 11.43 cm) show the exterior of the hotel with the Victory Trolley that carried vacationers to the resort, waiting outside. A complementary 9.66" x 7.5" (24.54 x 19.05 cm) photograph shows the trolley and a group of workers. Another group of workers posed for the camera in the next 9.75" x 7" (24.77 x 17.8 cm) photograph. Three other photographs show the grounds of the hotel: a 10" x 7.25" (25.4 x 18.42 cm) photograph of the front lawn, a 10" x 7" (25.4 x 17.8 cm) photograph of the expansive veranda, and a 10" x 6.75 (25.4 x 17.15 cm) image of a couple in the garden. The final 10" x 7" (25.4 x 17.8 cm) photograph shows the Victory Hotel Band performing in front of the hotel. The photographs are part of an extensive collection at the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society. Put-in-Bay was a popular resort area from as early as the 1860s. Its Hotel Victory was touted as the largest summer hotel in the world. The building measured 600 feet by long by 300 feet wide and included 625 guest rooms. The hotel's checkered existence began when J.K. Tillotson organized the Put-in-Bay Hotel Company in 1888, and it was finally opened for occupancy in the summer of 1892. It went into receivership, and closed in August of 1893. Over the next several years the hotel changed hands several times, opening again in 1896, and operating off and on, until it burned in August of 1919. All of the guests escaped safely, but only the hotel's foundation was left after the fire, which was considered the worst in the island's history.
