Put-in-Bay
was a
popular
resort
area
from as
early
as the
1860s
. Its
Hotel
Victory
was
touted
as the
largest
summer
hotel
in the
world
. The
building
measured
600
feet
by
long
by
300
feet
wide
and
included
625
guest
rooms
. The
hotel's
checkered
existence
began
when
J.K
.
Tillotson
organized
the
Put-in-Bay
Hotel
Company
in
1888
, and
it
was
finally
opened
for
occupancy
in the
summer
of
1892
.
It
went
into
receivership
, and
closed
in
August
of
1893
.
Over
the
next
several
years
the
hotel
changed
hands
several
times
,
opening
again
in
1896
, and
operating
off
and on,
until
it
burned
in
August
of
1919
.
All
of the
guests
escaped
safely
, but
only
the
hotel's
foundation
was
left
after
the
fire
,
which
was
considered
the
worst
in the
island's
history
.
