Description
Two
photographs
depict
the
Baltimore
&
Ohio
Railroad
bridge
in
Marietta
,
Ohio
following
the
1913
flood
. The
first
photograph
shows
the
damage
caused
by the
floodwaters
,
while
the
second
shows
the
structure
under
repair
. The
photographs
measure
6.5
" by
13.5
(16.5
by

cm)
. In
late
March
1913
, an
unusually
heavy
rainstorm
moved
into
Ohio
.
It
rained
steadily
for
five
days
and the
streams
throughout
the
state
rose
rapidly
. By the
third
day
of the
downpour
,
levees
were
overtopped
and
many
towns
suffered
disastrous
flooding
.
Nearly
every
riverside
city
had
flooding
.
Great
fires
that
raged
unchecked
added
to the
destruction
and the
loss
of
life
.
When
the
flood
waters
receded
, the
destruction
was
staggering
.
Tons
of
mud
and
debris
covered
the
streets
,
homes
,
businesses
and
factories
. The
buildings
in the
heart
of the
town
were
either
burned
or
swept
away
and the
bridges
were
gone
. There was
no
fuel
to
dry
the
houses
or
warm
the
people
. In
Marietta
,
984
families
lived
in the
flooded
part
of the
city
affecting
6,000
people
.
Property
loss
in
Marietta
was
estimated
at
more
than
$1
million
.
Statewide
the
death
toll
stood
at
361
and
property
damages
were
well
over
$100,000,000
and
65,000
were
forced
to
temporarily
leave
their
homes
.
Since
the
1913
flood
,
most
of the
small
communities
along
the
Muskingum
River
have
seen
a
slow
and
steady
decline
in
population
and
economic
growth
. By
1933
,
Ohio
approved
the
Muskingum
Watershed
Conservancy
District
,
headquartered
in
New
Philadelphia
. The
district
built
14
dams
,
creating
14
reservoirs
in the
upper
Muskingum
River
Valley
. The
conservancy
district
controls
the
16,000
acres
of
water
and
38,000
acres
of
land
.
