Description	This photograph shows the 1922 Hiram High School basketball team that won the Portage County title in that year. Pictured are (left to right) John Hopkins, Edgar Hurd, Sherman Leach, Frank Hurd, Kenneth Hurd, and Hugh Arnold. The photograph measures 9.5" x 7.5" (24.13 x 19.05 cm). Basketball was originally invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891. While working at the School for Christian Workers (now Springfield College) in Springfield Massachusetts, Naismith was given orders to create an indoor "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the winter. While he originally tried to bring in outdoor games such as soccer, these proved too physical. He wanted a game with finesse and accuracy and developed basketball with the object of the game being to put the ball into your opponent's goal. Naismith developed 13 rules to organize the game. The sport gained in popularity and gained worldwide recognition when introduced as an event at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
