Description
Henry
Clay
Frick
made
numerous
donations
to the
National
McKinley
Birthplace
Memorial
building
, and the
McKinley
Memorial
Library
in
particular
. On
September
30
,
1914
,
Joseph
Butler
visited
Henry
Clay
Frick
at his
home
in
Pittsburgh
to
seek
a
donation
for
construction
of the
memorial
building
and
advice
on
funding
the
public
library
addition
.
When
Frick
learned
that the
starting
cost
of the
library
would be
$50,000
, he
went
to his
study
and
wrote
a
check
for that
amount
. The
only
stipulation
was that his
name
not be
part
of the
name
of the
library
. In
recognition
of
Henry
Clay
Frick's
support
,
Butler
commissioned
John
Massey
Rhind
to
create
this
bronze
37
"
(93.98
cm)
bust
of
Frick
.
It
was
placed
in the
center
of the
library's
lobby
.
Frick
continued
to
support
the
library
and
memorial
after
they were
constructed
,
including
donating
1,000
new
books
in
1919
to
double
the
size
of the
existing
collection
.
Henry
Clay
Frick
(1849-1919)
was an
industrialist
and
philanthropist
from
western
Pennsylvania
.
Over
the
course
of his
career
he had
managing
and
financial
interests
in
Frick
&
Company
(suppliers
for the
steel
industry)
,
Carnegie
Steel
Company
, and the
United
States
Steel
Corporation
. He was a
generous
patron
of
libraries
,
museums
, and the
arts
and had been a
close
associate
of
President
McKinley
.
William
McKinley
(1843-1901)
, the
twenty-fifth
president
of the
United
States
, was
born
in
Niles
,
Ohio
. He
enlisted
in the
army
at the
outbreak
of the
Civil
War
and,
after
being
mustered
out
,
studied
law
and
opened
a
law
office
in
Canton
,
Ohio
.
McKinley
served
in the
U.S
.
Congress
for
14
years
, and
became
president
in
1897
,
largely
due
to the
influence
of
Marcus
Hanna
,
boss
of the
Cleveland
political
machine
.
McKinley
was
most
noted
for his
foreign
policy
and the
conduct
of the
Spanish-American
War
in
1898
.
It
was
during
McKinley's
administration
that the
U.S
.
acquired
its
first
overseas
possessions
in the
Philippines
,
Guam
, and
Puerto
Rico
. He was
re-elected
in
1900
, but was
assassinated
by
anarchist
Leon
Czolgosz
in
1901
. His
running
mate
,
Theodore
Roosevelt
, then
became
president
.
